CONCORD, NH — Richard Levi Royea, born 40, of Meredith was arrested at 6:07 p.m. on Feb. 6 on a felony theft by unauthorized taking, more than $1,501, charge after an incident at Speedway on North Main Street.

Christopher Brooks, 53, of Court Street in Boston, Massachusetts, was arrested at 12:50 p.m. on Jan. 22 on forgery and theft by deception, more than $1,501, charges, both felonies. An officer was sent to the Merrimack County Savings Bank on North Main Street for a report of a fraud incident. A bank staffer told dispatch on Jan. 21 that at another bank, a suspect attempted to cash a fraudulent check, and an alert was sent out to other locations. Now, the suspect was at their bank trying to cash a check, according to an affidavit. When officers arrived, the suspect had just left. After taking and releasing a description of the suspect, another officer spotted him at the intersection of Centre and North Main streets. The staffer told the reporting officer the suspect, identified later as Brooks, tried to cash a check for $3,322.44, the report said. With large checks, the staffer said, tellers inspect the check and call the company or customer to verify. Another bank staffer recognized the name from the notice made by the Nashua branch manager previously. Brooks, the affidavit said, used his Massachusetts license as an ID and when the teller in Nashua looked over the check, the signatures did not match. The check was from Raisanen Investments LLC, a Nashua company. The reporting officer said there was a “significant difference” between the signature on file and the one on the check. A second officer, when speaking with Brooks, accused him of admitting to trying to cash the check. “He said that ‘some guy’ was paying him to come to New Hampshire to cash three checks,” the report stated. “He said that he was given $200 to cash a check in Nashua yesterday.” Brooks was accused of admitting to attempting to cash three separate checks at two different banks before coming to Concord. Brooks was then arrested. He was arraigned on Jan. 24 and is due back in Merrimack County Superior Court on a dispositional conference on March 29.
